One of Those Weeks

WiP: Felted Stocking cuff (again)

That's right, I've missed Monday and Wednesday this week...it's just been that knit of week, totally and completely.

Busy with work, busy with life...And it caught up to me yesterday with a wicked stomach bug that affected my balance and gave me motion-sickness symptoms (Dallas gave me a hug, and because of the dizziness it nearly made me throw up). I don't know what it is, but I have a feeling that I need to sleep and eat really well the next few days to kick it. It also means I missed work...And I'm going to miss my friend's baby shower. :(

But, at the same time, I've come to realize that I really do need to listen to my body and what it's demanding of me. In this case, I obviously need to slow down a bit and I can tell I need to sleep and relax.

Gosh darn it if I still don't want to do it all, though.

Anyway, this weekend will be exactly that: rest, relaxation, and kicking whatever is in my system.

That means that I might also cast on a cardigan for myself, since my first pullover was a success!

We shall see.

Have a lovely evening, my knitties. :)

Well, That Flew By...

WiP: Mittens!

Well...That was one heck of a weekend. haha

Birthday party Friday night, wedding shower late Saturday (and a drive back afterwards), and we went to Banff on Sunday and dinner with Dallas's family.

But it was good.

It means, however, that I missed the "Pretty Picks" from yesterday...But I needed the break. We will return to the regularly scheduled program today and all following days.

Just working away at the mittens. Not going to be done before Dallas heads back up North, but they will ready for his return!! (Hopefully.)

Baby shower this weekend and a veg day. Very exciting.

Have a lovely day, my dearies~!

Queue Enhancement: Patterns That Make my Geeky Heart Glad

These are awesome. They remind me of Yoda. I know I'm not a sock knitter (yet), but these do my geeky heart glad for sure. Also, these are not available to everyone yet (will become available August 15, 2013), but if you are one of the lucky few who got it in the Cookie A. sock club...Know that I am jealous.

Grace is right! It doesn't get much better than these cute lovey-dovey robot mittens!! I love that she shows these in two different colours so that you can see the differences for you and your lovey, too! Share some robot lurve~!

I'm a huge Harry Potter fan. Although I don't like Bellatrix (and although I think she got a hard knock, what with being in love with the psychopath), I do love these socks. They look like an excellent way to show off vareigated yarn.

I don't think I need to say much about this pattern. Just that it's gorgeous, I will one day knit it, and I think my favourite part is the sleeves.

Need I say more?

Because who doesn't want a tiny unicorn...?? Look at the first picture of this pattern to see how truly itty bitty this little unicorn is!

These are the socks that inspired the whole post. They take me instantly back to my first few weeks of university, and to my continued love for Beowulf.

Now, my lovelies, have you recently found a pattern that has made your geeky heart glad? Let me know in the comments!

Have fun knitting!

Mittens, Mittens, Mittens

WiP: Felted Mittens

Random Act of Cuteness:Best Six Minutes of Your Day

Sounds like a familiar theme, right? I've knit a lot of mittens in the lifetime of this blog...And I know that I will continue to knit mittens a lot over my lifetime.

It seems that I may just have a relationship with mittens the way that some knitters seem to have a relationship with socks: they are my go-to project.

Need a gift? Mittens! Because who doesn't need mittens in Calgary weather?
Need something plain to work on because I just ripped out 23 rows of lace that was knitted with 2-ply lace? Mittens!
Need car knitting? Mittens!
Need something that will give me a sense of accomplishment? Mittens!

I don't always knit plain mittens, either. I made thrummed mittens for Dallas's mom for Christmas, and I've made two-colour stranded mittens for his sister, but when it comes right down to it...I mostly knit plain mittens just so I have something to do with my hands.

So that's what I'm doing right now. Mittens. See point #2 up there about why I would need mittens? Yeah, that's right. The shawl got ripped out at the 23rd row mark because I kept messing up the increase/decrease sections of the lace. (How do I do that within 23 rows...? Don't know. I'll tackle it again after these mittens.)

After these mittens? I might venture out into a scarf.

Or the baby knits I'm supposed to be working on!

Have a lovely day, my dears.

Wedding Wednesday 7/80: Senbazuru - One Thousand Paper Cranes

There are many reasons why people fold paper cranes.

The #1 reason is that folding 1000 paper cranes is supposed to grant you one wish.

They are given as wedding gifts, left at shrines (I saw lots of them when I was in Japan), and the story a lot of people know is also the little girl, Sadako, who was folding 1000 paper cranes after the bomb hit Hiroshima. Today, the peace park that is in Hiroshima is filled with paper cranes from various schools and individuals.

Source: Andrew Dunn, Wikimedia Commons, via Origami Fun!

I've heard multiple different stories, besides the wish, of why the bride folds the cranes. But my favourite for why a couple folds cranes is basically that if you can survive, with patience and dignity, the folding of 1000 paper cranes with one person, that means that you're pretty well set for life (doesn't hurt that you can wish on them when they're done)!

So, that's hopefully what we'll do!

The cranes can be colourful, fill in spaces, and just in general look awesome. They also kind of look like flowers.

I am definitely mashing together a couple different of "themes" as it were, anyway. I want fairy tale, but I also want to involve the influence Japan has had over my life.

(Our cake isn't going to have cranes on it, though that's cool, too. I really like the chandelier.)

Either way, I think it will be a good tradition to incorporate into our wedding.

What influences have you included in your wedding, or are planning on including in it?

Let me know in the comments!

Two-At-a-Time Magic Loop Mittens!

WiP: Mittens
FOs: Jane Richmond's Oatmeal Pullover; 118 yards of three-ply yarn.

It was a productive long weekend, with me finishing the Oatmeal pullover, I spun a lot...And I even cast on and knit quite a few rows of my Spanish Peacock Shawl...But I had to frog that, because I was getting really wonky stitch counts.

Anyway.

Now I'm working on mittens to felt for Dallas, and I just learnt how to do it as two-at-a-time with Magic loop. I'm hoping it saves me some time, since I won't have to stop and constantly count both of the mittens and try to make them match...since they will match from the beginning.

I'm also excited about it because I figured out what I can do to make the "after-thought" cuff (as it were), less crunchy. Since the felting makes the mittens like gauntlets, I have been knitting a cuff afterwards to keep the mitten on the hand (or knitting along with the mitten). However, I have been making these cuffs out of acrylic; this means that when they hit the hot water and agitation that is needed in felting, they lose a lot of their elasticity and get pretty crunchy.

I had a brainwave on Saturday when I was at the yarn store, though (shhhhhhh, I'm a slow learner) and realized that I can totally used superwash wool for the cuff and get the elasticity and wonderful warmth of wool.

Plan made.

Now, I'mma go knit some mittens.

Have a good night, my dears!

Pretty Picks: Coffee Mugs

Mmmm, sweet brown elixir of coffee. This is one of my favourite things in the world (materialistically, it's after only yarn. Mentally, it's after Dallas and yarn).

So, it only seems fitting that I actually do this blog post on coffee mugs!

Friday Queue Enhancement: Recently Added

Essentially, what I've added recently to my queue that I think some of you folks would enjoy. :)

What have you added to your queue recently? Mine seems to be mostly sweaters...And a sheep!

Pemberley

Shhhhhh. I know I'm just knitting my first sweater...But I love the colourwork on this one! Definitely something to work towards!!

Juno

Love this one. Again, something to work towards. I love the yoke~!

Owls

I'm obsessed with Harry Potter. This sweater's love is a given. I think this might be the next sweater (after the Calligraphy Cardigan) on the needles.

Grettir

Is it bad that I want to make myself...AND Dallas one of these?? Not necessarily matching, but at least the same colour. haha

Old Fashioned Sheep Toy

SHEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPP!!!!

Almost There!!

WiP: Sweater
Needs Felting: Stockings

Happy Valentine's Day, my dears!

Dallas outdid himself this year with a very nice dinner last night (he's heading up North today). Tasty, tasty. And, heart-shaped waffled today!

Anyway. Tonight, I'm going to head to the gym after work for a little bit at least, and then head home and knit to my heart's content.

This Monday is the long weekend, which I'm super excited for. I am definitely sleeping, since yesterday I called it a half-day, headed home, promptly crashed into bed, and slept for over an hour. Just kind of feverish and chilly. Feel almost 100% today, though, because of the extra sleep!

So, yes. Saturday, I'm taking a learn-to-make sushi class with my future sister-in-law, and then I don't have any plans besides the whole sleeping thing. I'm going to try to start shifting my sleeping pattern more to this whole "early-morning-gym" thing. In part because whenever I go in the evening it is a.) super busy, b.) smells, and c.) is humid. I'm going to try to keep it up at least 3-4 times a week, if I can't do it every day.

3 weeks to a good habit, right? hahaha

The other thing this means is that I hopefully get some pictures and info up on Etsy. As long as the light is good, I'm at least going to take pictures!

And, fingers crossed, I can get my shawl cast on and actually worked on this weekend! I think that'll be my biggest goal. haha

Anyway. Hope everyone is well!

Have a lovely day!!

Wedding Wednesday 6/80: VistaPrint Review

All right, so if you've been watching my blog for awhile, you'll remember that I've talked about VistaPrint, briefly, before. Last year, they printed my banner for my fairs, and they have done some work for my 9-5 job.

Anyway. Dallas also got our Save-The-Dates printed through them, and I have to say that they were very quickly and well done!

We received them last Friday, a business day before we expected them, and they were high quality and are easy to address with Sharpies.

I will definitely go with VistaPrint for future print jobs.

Other than that, nothing.

Next week, perhaps, some shawl updates~!

Have a lovely day, my dears.

Sleeves!!

WiP: Sweater
Needs Felting: Stockings

That's right! I'm about 1/2 way through the first sleeve. Yay! I had some problem making the pick up of the underarm stitches look good, even when I picked up more to tighten up the holes, but it looks all right. I hope the second sleeve looks better.

After this? I'm going to work on my shawl (finally), and then on to Heather Fettig's Calligraphy Cardigan, which I'm going to knit in Berroco Vintage DK, in I think the "Cerulean" colourway. I'll confirm those details when I start!

Otherwise, need to start knitting on the super-secret project, and a couple of other commission-like things. Like, baby pants. Super cute baby pants, from Nikki Van de Car's What to Knit When You're Expecting. This book provides a lot of really good patterns for baby knits, so I'm excited!

Can I just say that it feels like I should be starting my stockpile so that I can dress my own babies in something knit hopefully close to everyday? The biggest culprit that made me think of this (besides Nikki's super awesome book) was the kit that you can now get from Eat. Sleep. Knit.: Dream in Color's Tulip Cardigan for babies kit.

I saw these recently on the Yarn Harlot's blog (since I'm going through the archives), and I think that this is something I should be knitting for bundling baby home. hehe (I also just noticed that these kits have enough yarn for either a 6-9 month or 12-18 month old sweater!!)

We'll see what I feel like then, but I think I need to start something so that I have a stockpile. Kind of like the linens thing that brides used to do. (Which is my shawl, but I'm just lucky that I have time to do that!)

Anyway. That's what my days have looked like. Been busy at work, busy at home.

Dallas is taking me out for dinner the night before Valentine's, since he'll be heading out the afternoon of the 14th, and so I'm excited about that. I'll let you know how it goes. :)

I can't wait for Alberta's Family Day this Monday! Long weekend, ahoy! I also get to take a sushi-making class with my future sister-in-law~!

Other than that, I'm going to hunker down, watch some Disney movies, and knit.

Have a lovely evening, my dears!

Hey, They're Finally Here!

I have actually done more work on the sweater, but these are the pictures I can show:

Sleeve on hold!

Sunday Night

The yarn after winding. I've only been through one skein of the yarn, as listed on my projector page:

And the custom order stockings with a picot binding. Still need to be felted and blocked, and then life will be good! :)

Hope you're all having a lovely weekend!

Queue Enhancement: Valentine's Day-ish...And Then! A Cat!

This is a fly-by post. I have been super swamped at work still, so I've been tired when I get home and haven't been able to pre-write as many posts as I would like.

Anyway, onto some patterns that I queued or loved this week.

Love Socks

This is a free download, and with Valentine's Day close, a super cute knit (and kudos to you if you finish them between now and Valentine's! If you do, let me know in the comments).

Be Still My Heart

Another free, super cute pattern from a Calgary-local designer. (She also has a yarn store over at Etsy. Check her out at Yummy Yarn Studio. My Victoria shawl is out of one of her super-awesome yarns.)

Elizabeth Bennet Sumer Blouse

I saw this book at The Loop - Kensington while I was in there the other day, and want it pretty much just for this sweater. (On another note, The Loop in Kensington restores my faith in lys after being put out by others.)

His Golden Lair

Who wouldn't love a Hobbit-inspired pattern? Especially something golden?

The Fog Sweater

I'm always on the look-out for men's sweaters that I might knit. I don't think I would get Dallas to wear this one without a zipper, though! Perhaps time to learn steeking...? (Also, I was very attracted to this pattern due to its name!)

The Parlor Cat

And Then! The Cat! Yes indeed. I love this pattern. Will definitely be moving it up in my queue.

Hope you guys are inspired, and I will chat at you more on Tuesday! Watch for "Pretty Picks" on Monday, though!!

The Endless Fields of Stockinette

WiP: Oatmeal Pullover (Linked in Tuesday's post); stockings

Quick one today.

On the (seemingly) endless body of the Oatmeal Pullover. I put lots of time and effort, and the rounds seem to go really fast...But it doesn't feel like it's grown at all over the past couple of days.

Oh well. It'll be weekend knitting, along with the cuffs on the stockings.

Nothing else. Been super busy at work.

So, heading out!

Have a lovely day, my dears.

Wedding Wednesday 5/80: Exercise and Save-the-Dates

That's right, don't laugh.

That's all that's been done.

Exercise.

Save-the-Dates.

Oh, we got our photographer (I think I mentioned that last week).

It's Andre of InkPink Photography

He photographed my friend's wedding and did an amazing job! I'm super excited to have him photograph our wedding too!

Save-the-Dates are the in the mail.

I have the venue contract, but I need to look over it a bit more closely and sign, send, and pay.

Running off!

Take care, my lovelies.

And She Knit the Whole Weekend Long

WiP: Felted Stockings, Jane Richmond's "Oatmeal Pullover"

Complete fail on my part for promising that I would get extra posts done this weekend...But I was so exhausted that I curled up, finished the felted stocking bodies (have to finish the cuffs)...And cast on the Oatmeal Pullover for myself.

I'm already about halfway through the body, and then I just need to knit the sleeves. For my first sweater, I hope it turns out well; it looks go so far, and since it was relatively easy, I'm thinking that I'll have to make this in a few other colours for everyday wear! It seems like it will be a very versatile sweater, which is exactly what I need. Appropriate for work AND play. :)

I ended up watching "The Help" and "Thor" this weekend. I had never seen "The Help" before, although I had read it. I think that they did a really good job adapting the book to the movie, with a split in focus between the two groups so that it didn't turn into a movie where it was focussed on the white girl's plight to write her first book, with the help of the black help; instead, I found it to be a very good balance between both the struggles of a coming-of-age writer in Jackson, Mississippi, in the turmoil and struggles for the black population at that time.

"Thor" is good as always. This is about 50% in part because he's shirtless for that one scene, but also because I enjoy superhero movies, particularly Marvel. (Shhhhhh. I like DC, too.) It also was really cool to watch it again after having seen "The Avengers," since I picked up on a lot that I didn't before watching "The Avengers."

Last night was an amazing mail night, which made me super happy. And...Yeah. That was my exciting weekend. I'm going to work more on my sweater, and get the stocking finished up hopefully by this weekend!

By the way, what's YOUR favourite superhero movie? Let me know in the comments!

Queue Enhancement Friday! Blankets

So, a blanket is usually a stand-by go-to for me for presents. So I figured I should share some of the patterns have either caught my eye, or I have completed!

Professor McGonagall

This one was in the top 20 on Ravelry just as I was starting this post. I take this as a very good sign. Looks awesome! I love the intarsia colour work.

Bright Star

I have been eying this one for myself for years! Maybe in 2013 I will actually be able to knit it!

Curlicue Coverlet

This one is just super cute.

Star Illusion Blanket

This pattern is the first time I've ever seen illusion knitting. I still haven't knit it, but I think that this would make a super cute baby blanket. One day!

Moderne Log Cabin Blanket

This was wedding #1's gift. I love how it turned out, especially in the yarn I used. A definite "will-knit-again" blanket.

How to Log Cabin

This is wedding #2's gift (which I have finished) and a pieced blanket that I made for my then-boyfriend, now fiancee, who's taken it up North with him to work. I love the blanket, don't like how it keeps growing. haha

The Beekeeper's Quilt

This is another blanket I've been eying for a couple years...But I need more fingering/sock weight scraps. So this one will be a long WiP. Maybe a life project! haha

I hope that these patterns inspire you, and I would love to get some feedback from you all on what are your favourite blanket patterns that you have either made or have in your queue! Post links in the comments for a reciprocal queue enhancement.

Have a lovely evening!

Katie =^..^=

P.S. Photos will be posted this weekend, so look for at least one bonus post either Saturday or Sunday~!
